No Sprout Bird Seed
No Sprout Bird Seed
Zamzows No Sprout birdseed is an excellent blend for the birds in the Treasure Valley. It is a great mix of seeds to complete almost any bird’s diet including; House finch, American goldfinch, Pine Siskin, House Sparrow, Red-winged Blackbird, and the Northern Flicker. Plus, the best part about the Zamzows No Sprout birdseed is that it won’t leave a mess of “weeds” in your yard or flower beds.
Zamzows No Sprout birdseed is a mix of seeds with hulled millet, sunflower hearts, cracked corn, cracked peanut pieces, and nyjer seed, all of which will not grow if they hit the ground in your yard. The reason for this is, the nyjer thistle seed comes from Nigeria and hits the ports in New York. There it is steamed cleaned at a high temperature to kill the cotyledon of the seed. The cotyledon would have been the first thing to emerge from the seed at germination. With the cotyledon dead the birds still get all the nutrition from the seed without any mess for you. The peanut pieces, cracked corn, and sunflower hearts are all shelled and then cracked, thus also killing the cotyledon but keeping the nutrients in the seeds. The hulled millet is just that, millet without the outer shell on it, making it easier for the birds to eat and this process also keeps it from germinating.

This is such a good blend for the Treasure Valley area because of the variety of nutrients the birds get from a mix of seeds. The hulled millet is a good source of protein, it is also rich in vitamin B, thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, pyridoxine, and folate. Sunflower hearts not only attract more species of birds than any other type of seed but they also contain the fatty acids that the birds need to maintain their energy, especially when it is cold. Cracked corn is essential in your bird’s diet because it contains fiber and protein. It is also an extra source of heat for the birds in the winter months. Peanut pieces attract some of the more entertaining birds like chickadees, wrens, and nuthatches. Peanuts are high in protein, oil, and fat, which makes them a perfect addition to the foods we offer in Zamzows No Sprout. Nyjer thistle is sometimes referred to as “black gold” due to the higher price that results from importing and sterilizing costs but is also a great source of fatty acids and protein for birds.

This mix can be fed to the birds at any time of the year but is extremely beneficial in the fall and winter months. This it is a very high energy and nutritious mix for the birds in the Treasure Valley. Best of all, Zamzows No Sprout will not leave a mess for you to clean up after the birds have eaten.
