No, those are not wild canaries, they are gold finches hanging around your house. Male gold finches are a very colorful bird that is native to the treasure valley. Gold Finches are here year round, but only have their intense yellow plumage for part of the year. Gold Finches are very easy to attract if you know the secrets. Gold Finches love thistle seed. Niger Thistle seed is a grain seed that is mainly raised in India. You don't have to worry about Nyjer Thistle growing in your lawn and it is related to lawn thistles in name only. Gold Finches are a clinging bird and prefer a feeder that allows them grasp with their toenails. A thistle sock is a very inexpensive way to get started attracting these colorful birds. Gold Finches may be slow to come at first, but after a week or two, they will start to come if flocks. The beauty of feeding thistle is that the wild birds take the seed one grain at a time and they are at the feeder for a long time. Your friends and family will be amazed at your ability to draw in these colorful Gold Finch natives to the Treasure valley.
