How to diagnose a sick Golden Honey Locust Tree

Question
HI, I have a sick Golden Honey Locust tree. The tree is at least 6 years old. The problem appeared same time last year and I was given advice by Kuna Zamzows to spray the tree for fungus which I did using Zamzows fungus product. The tree never really looked any different after the treatment. Again this year, half of the tree is fine, the leaves are yellow in the spring and then turn green for summer. The other half had yellow leaves in the spring (as it should) and then they start to die and fall off. Half of the tree is currently full of green leaves and the other half of the tree is bare and looks dead. There are no signs of bugs and the few leaves remaining on the dead side of the tree are pale yellow green, small and limp.  Can you help me figure out what I should do now?

Answer
The first thing we want to notice is the distinct pattern you described in that only half the tree is affected.  This can be caused by a number of things.  Whenever there is a pattern like this we need to rule out physical or environmental problems as bugs and fungus don’t usually just attack half a tree.  There usually some damage associated with that side f the tree.

The things I would look for would start with the ground and work up.  Did you plant the tree or did a landscaper?  What  is the damaged side of the tree facing i.e. a field, a ditch, the road?  Also, have you treated it with any systemic insecticides or have you used any other chemicals around that side of the tree.  The last thing I would ask is if there is any construction or digging around the tree?  Lets start with those questions and see if we can come up with anything.  Feel free to give me a call at the Chinden store at 846-7830.
