Slime Flux in trees

Question
My neighbor is concerned because one of her Walnut trees appears to be diseased, and she's hoping to find someone to help her figure out what's wrong and how to treat it.  She's willing to lose her crop for a year or so if it means saving the tree.

Answer
I hate to be the bearer of bad news but this tree appears to be suffering from a bacterial disease known as slime flux.  There is no cure for this unfortunately.  Slime flux is the buildup of multiple types of bacteria under the bark that begin to ooze out and stain the bark of the tree.  Many things have been tried but most of them have been found to do more harm than good.  The good news is it shouldn’t harm the quality of the fruit.  Trees don’t usually seem to die from this and after a few years it will probably stop, although the bark will be discolored for quite awhile.  I would give it some thrive and watch for secondary problems like stressed leaves.  Hope this helps, feel free to ask if you have any other questions.
