Tips for growing cucumbers that are not bitter

Question
What causes cucumbers to be bitter?

Answer
There a couple of problems that will cause cucumbers to be bitter in the garden. One is weather related, as in high heat during the growing of the cucumbers. The other is improper watering, either keeping the plant too wet or letting it get too dry in between waterings. Most of the time it is a watering issue. However you can reduce the chances of growing bitter cucumbers by selecting a burpless variety when planting. Ninety percent of the time this will solve the problem of the bitter taste.

However improper watering will still cause a problem in the burpless varieties. Once a plant starts producing bitter cucumbers, it will continue to do so for the rest of the season. Once in a while the cucumbers will have a bitter taste only at the stem end or just at the blossom end, giving you some a still useable harvest.
