Can I use Peat Moss for a substrate in my Corn Snake enclosure?
Main / The Ask an Expert Blog

Bark is very costly in my country and because the substrate needs monthly changing, it?s too expensive to keep on going.

Question
I’ll be buying a Lavender Corn Snake and I’ve set up a very natural looking enclosure for it. But I’m facing a problem. Bark is very costly in my country and because the substrate needs monthly changing, it’s too expensive to keep on going.

Aspen shavings are not available as well. Corncob are available but I hear that corncob harvest lots of bacteria for my snake. Can I use peat moss? I don’t want to use news paper because I want the enclosure to look as natural as possible.

Answer

Peat moss will work great, but do not allow it to become soggy.
