Do cats have special requirements for their teeth?

Cats are no different than humans or dogs when it comes to dental care.  All must take care of their teeth. Cats have softer teeth of the three so it important to check their teeth on a regular schedule. Ideally the best prevention for tooth and gum  {periodontal} disease  is to brush daily with a soft tooth brush and cat toothpaste starting at an early age when just a kitten. Do not use human toothpaste as it is too abrasive and can cause stomach upsets. Try to get on a regular schedule so they will know what and when to expect the brushing.  Make it an enjoyable experience. Keep the session short to begin with. When first starting to brush your  cats teeth begin at the front and work your way  to the back with your index finger. You can wrap some gauze around your finger dipped in tuna water so it tastes good.  All Zamzows carry a finger toothbrush and long brushes also, feeding your cat a dry cat food such as Zamzows Professional Kitten, Adult cat or our Senior Reduced Fat will make them chew more. Saliva stimulated by chewing has an anti-plaque, anti-bacterial action.  Zamzows also carries Feline Greenies dental treats for cats in assorted flavors to help clean their teeth.  Have regular dental check ups with your vet at least once a year and professional cleaning once or twice a year.
