How to choose a Parrot

How to Choose the right Parrot for you
by KatieCopple

If you are thinking about buying a parrot, here are a few points to consider. Most people think of parrots as large bright colored bird that talks a lot and bonds to one specific person. The Parrot family is a wide and deverse set of beautiful bird species that includes many smaller birds too. The small parrot family consists of Cockatiels, Parakeets and Love birds that require less attention a large parrot. These small parrots bond to family members. Small parrots may not always the best talkers, with a little repetition and work, they can form small vocabulary and mimicry skills. These small parrots average about a 15-20 year life span with proper care.

If you are a part time worker or a stay at home mom, you may want to consider a medium size parrot such as a Conure, large
Parakeet or a Quaker. These groups of parrots are very vocal and have outgoing personalities. They make great additions to families with older children or single house holds. They can range from a 15-35 year life span and require more interaction than a smaller parrot would due to higher levels of brain activity.

Another classification to consider in the parrot families is the large parrot. These large parrots include African Grey’s, Amazons and Macaws. These parrots require attention everyday with constant interaction and stimulation. They are considered to be as smart as some 2-3 year old children. They do not do well in an apartment atmosphere due to their large voices, but would do better in a household where they can be the center of attention and not disturb the neighbors.

Large parrots are life long companions and range a life span of 50-100 years. They are capable of talking with a vast vocabulary with a lot of repetative training. These large parrots also can become very protective of their owners, so they are not recommended for people starting a family or with young children.
