Ducks as pets

Ducks: Which breed would make the best pet?  The Pekin is the most common domestic duck of choice. Before you decide on a breed for a pet, remember the Pekin is the tried and true standard that woks best for most casual duck owners. Other breeds may have quirks or undesired personality traits that can be a challenge for a first time owner.

Pekin ducks have a large white body with orange beak and feet. Because the Pekin duck has such a large body and skinny legs they are prone to leg injuries they are also unable to fly. The Pekin is of Chinese origin, first imported to the United States
around 1873. Hence they are on restaurant menus as Peking duck. For the average duck owner there are many reasons for keeping such interesting pets, they will eat slugs, snails, and various other bugs around the yard. They also eat pellet mash, and also enjoy vegetable trimmings.

Starting a duckling is fairly easy. For small numbers all you need is a large cardboard box some shavings or straw a heat lamp for warmth a feeder and a water container. The bigger they get the more space you will need to provide for them. Observe the birds if they stay away from the heat lamp, turn it off. Always keep the water fresh and the feed container full. Another good idea is to have a pool of some kind for them to swim in a child's  wading pool should work very well.   It  takes a disciplined person to be a duck owner. Ducks require far more upkeep and a bigger commitment than a cat or a dog.
